TNG CalendarStars 2013

"We may also confide a little in what Galileo called the courtesy of Nature, by virtue of which a ray of light from an unexpected source will sometimes illuminate topics at first believed inaccessible to our speculations [...]. A serendipitous discovery of a new double star at the TNG

The observations carried out in 2004, 2006 and 2007 with the adaptive optics module (AdOpt@TNG), mounted on the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG), reveal a new double star (0.35" separation) in TYCHO 40-501-1, 900parsec far. 2006 and 2007 spectra with the high resolution echelle spectrograph (SARG), mounted in the same telescope, confirmed the imaging detection and contributed to fix the spectral types of the two separated stars whose magnitudes now are known. There are strong considerations...

First technical light for Giano at TNG

GIANO is the new near infrared echelle spectrograph of the TNG, which can yield, in a single exposure, 0.9-2.5 micron spectra at a resolution R~50,000. On July 12th, 2012 the container with the instrument safely arrived at the TNG. In just 4 days the instrument has been successfully unloaded, mounted, integrated and interfaced at the Nasmyth A focus by the GIANO & TNG Teams. "The challenge of first light has been successfully achieved, now work must go on toward outstanding...
