Every night, under the pristine skies of La Palma, the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo observes the Universe and contributes to international astronomical research. The TNG Outreach programme was created to share this experience with the public, fostering connections between science, society and new generations. Through guided visits, educational activities and collaborations with schools, media and audiovisual productions, the TNG offers a unique insight into the daily work of astronomers, engineers and researchers exploring the cosmos with cutting-edge technologies.
Astronomy has the power to inspire curiosity, imagination and a sense of belonging to something greater. For this reason, the TNG promotes initiatives aimed not only at the scientific community, but also at students, teachers, families, journalists, photographers and astronomy enthusiasts from around the world.
During the summer months, the TNG takes part in the Open Days programme of the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, offering visitors the opportunity to explore one of Europe’s leading optical and infrared telescopes.
Guided tours allow the public to discover how the telescope operates, learn about the technologies used to observe the deep sky and understand how major astronomical discoveries are made. Visiting the TNG means stepping into a place where research, technology and wonder come together beneath one of the most extraordinary skies on Earth. For safety and operational reasons related to scientific activities, the telescope is not accessible for unscheduled visits.
The TNG and the schools Education and Schools
The TNG welcomes schools, students and educational groups interested in exploring the world of astronomy and contemporary scientific research. Its educational activities are designed to bring younger generations closer to STEM disciplines through engaging, hands-on experiences that transform curiosity into discovery. Observing a professional telescope up close, learning about the work of astronomers and understanding how we study the Universe offers a unique educational experience, capable of inspiring creativity, critical thinking and a passion for science.
Communications media Media and Visual Storytelling
The TNG collaborates with journalists, photographers, filmmakers, documentary producers and communication professionals interested in sharing the fascination of astronomical exploration. The observatory environment, the exceptional quality of the night sky and the telescope’s scientific activities provide an extraordinary setting for reports, audiovisual productions and photography projects focused on science and innovation. The TNG Outreach staff supports media teams and productions in the planning of interviews, filming and photo shoots, in accordance with the operational guidelines of the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory.
Beyond every image lies a deeper story of exploration. The Multimedia Gallery invites visitors to experience the universe through breathtaking observations, scientific discoveries, and moments captured by the National Telescope. From distant galaxies and luminous nebulae to the silent precision of astronomical research, each visual reveals the dialogue between technology, curiosity, and the endless wonder of the cosmos. Explore a collection designed to inspire, educate, and bring humanity closer to the mysteries of the night sky.
