For many years it has been a priority at the TNG to share our science and instrumentation achievements and news to the professional and amateur astronomers, science enthusiasts and to the general public. Following this commitment, today we are happy to announce myTNG iOS app, a new channel that will bring the TNG even closer to everyone interested in astronomy.
myTNG offers an ample list of contents including a gallery of spectacular astronomical images obtained at the TNG, a news-feed of...
Kepler's comeback. HARPS-N characterizes the first K2 planet
For four years Kepler space telescope continuously observed a single patch on the sky looking for the tiny, periodic fluctuations in brightness of more than 150000 stars, caused by planets transiting in front of them. In May 2013 the second gyro-wheel failed putting an end to the Kepler's primary mission, and many thought that was the end for the spacecraft too.
Nothing further from the truth! The scientists and engineers did not want to give up on otherwise functional space telescope. An...
CalendarStars 2015 is ready!
The brand new TNG calendar for year 2015 is ready.
Thanks to the collaboration with six Italian art galleries we hung our astronomical picture side by side with the artworks of past and contemporary painters.
Our bi-monthly galleries combine what is seen through the eyes of people looking at famous paintings of all ages with images of the universe captured through the eye of our 4 meter telescope. It is the beauty of Nature that shines through both.
TNG is grateful to the museums and...

CALL FOR PROPOSAL TNG & REM featuring HAN-GTO, GIANO-GTO and NOTTIME AOT 31 (2015A) is now open for proposals Applications for observing time for the period March 1st, 2015 - August 31st, 2015 are solicited and should be submitted by Monday 17th No
From today a new instrument is available at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo, for the Italian and international astronomical communities.
GIANO, a high resolution spectrograph (R~50000) has been installed and integrated in the set of instrumentation at TNG. It was developed at INAF-Osservatorio di Arcetri and it is the first instrument in the world capable to obtain a complete infrared spectrum in a single exposure. "GIANO has become a reality for observations, now it is the time for...
Characterization of four new transiting planets
Thanks to the data of the high resolution spectrograph HARPS-N, the group leaded by G. Hebrard could characterize four new transiting extrasolar planets: KOI-188b and KOI-195b are bloated hot Saturns, with orbital periods of 3.8 and 3.2 days, and masses of 0.25 and 0.34 MJup, respectively. They are located in the low-mass range of known transiting, giant planets. KOI-192b has a similar mass (0.29 M Jup) but a longer orbital period of 10.3 days. This places it in a domain where only few planets...
Kepler-101: a reversed planetary system observed with HARPS-N
Thanks to forty precise radial velocities obtained with the HARPS-N spectrograph at Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) together with the Kepler photometry, and in the context of the GTO program, astronomers were able to characterize an anomalous planetary system: Kepler-101
They found that this system consists of a hot super-Neptune, named Kepler-101b at a distance of 0.047 AU from the host star (a slightly evolved and metal-rich G-type star), and an outer Earth-sized planet, named...
